Bestselling master of military thrillers Thomas Leo Clancy, Jr. otherwise simply known all over the world as Tom Clancy, passed on Tuesday, October 1st, 2013 at John Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore.
Born on April 12, 1947 into a middle-class family from Baltimore, the bestselling author attended Loyola College majoring in English.
Mr. Clancy’s debut novel, The Hunt for Red October is known as one of the greatest genre novels ever written, having introduced espionage thriller that is replete with technical details about weaponry, intelligence agencies and submarines.
The book raised suspicions in the military arena about Mr. Clancy’s vast knowledge, but when asked who gave him all the information and the details depicted in the book, Clancy simply said he learned much of what he wrote from manuals, journals, interviews with submarine experts and military books.
The Hunt for Red October became a best seller when former US President Ronald Reagan said that he could not put the book down and that it was his “kind of yarn.”
Clancy was fascinated with military history and engineering, a fascination that is evident in his books such as The Hunt for Red October, Red Storm Rising, Threat Vector, Patriot Games, The Cardinal of the Kremlin and Clear and Present Danger.
Clancy’s books consistently received critical acclaim. In a 1986 issue of The Times magazine, Christopher Lehmann-Haupt was quoted as saying that Red Storm Rising far surpassed The Hunt for Red October, mentioning that the book was “the verbal equivalent of a high-tech video game.”
In true American fashion, Clancy is also notable for the virtuousness of his book characters. Robert Lekachman wrote that Clancy’s American characters are faithful husbands, devoted fathers, devoted servicemen and are paragons of courage.
His next book, “Command Authority” is in its pre-publication stages and a movie about his famous character, Jack Ryan, is due to be released in December 2013. Some of his books have been make into blockbuster films and were starred by great actors such as Harrison Ford, Alec Baldwin and Ben Affleck.
He is survived by Alexandra Llewellyn Clancy, his second wife and daughter Alexis Jacqueline Page Clancy. Tom Clancy had four other children from his previous marriage.
He will surely be missed by his fans all over the world.
