How Much Money Can You Make Self-Publishing Your Book?

Money – as well as return on investment – is an important factor in any form of publishing. A lot of this will be driven by the content of your book, the genre, and even your mindset about putting it out into the world.

Don’t get too worried though, because there are a lot of very successful authors who use self-publishing, as you’ll soon see.

Some Figures to Calm Your Mind

There are more than 60,000 self-published authors on Amazon who are earning more than $5,000 a month from their stories

There are more than 10,000 self-published authors on Amazon who are earning more than $5,000 a month from their stories. If you dive even deeper, you’ll find that there are more than 2,000 authors who earn greater than $10,000 each month from what they’ve written!

Remember that earning money as a book writer trumps income from a standard job because you’re no longer leveraging your time for money. In writing and publishing your book, you do the work once and it’s done. Your story is written, and every purchase of your book makes your one-time effort pay for itself over and over again.

The Most Successful Genres

It should be said first that if you have your heart set on a story, no matter the genre, then write it. Some genres tend to be more “successful” than others, but you’ll find that there are definitely exceptions, as will be explained.

The two most typically successful genres to write in are Thriller and Romance. Does this mean anything in these genres will outsell all others? Not at all.

Look at books like Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. See Star Wars books and The Hunger Games, all of which fall under fantasy or science fiction. These books were so great that they were made into Hollywood films, so if you’ve got a great story to tell, tell it. If it just so happens that your story falls under thriller or romance, then that’s a good start, but never let the typical buying habits of people make you feel that your story isn’t worth telling.

The Power of Volume

A great deal of success for self-published authors comes in the amount of books they produce. You might figure that would be a no-brainer, but the fact is that the more they write and reach out, the more they attract current readers to their other stories. So what would’ve been a one-time buyer is now interested in their other books, and is more prone to spread the word about them.

There are people in the non-fiction writing business who write “how-to” books, earning thousands of dollars a month, and some even more than $100,000 a year! All they do is write something to help others solve a problem, or to make an inconvenience more convenient.

You’ll find incredible success in books such as “The 4-Hour Body” by Tim Ferriss, which is non-fiction and designed to help people with fitness in a powerful, convenient way. So know that whatever you desire to publish, from “how-to” to “Harry Potter”, it definitely has a place in the writing world, and there will always be people who are happy to buy it.

It’s Time to Self-Publish

Thinking about self-publishing isn’t going to get your book published. You need to take action. That’s the only way to ever know how well your story will do.

There is ALWAYS the chance that your writing will be more phenomenal than even you realize, that it touches the hearts of more people than you know and becomes a best seller. Whatever you have to offer, whether fiction or non-fiction; taking the final step and getting it self-published is what finally makes it possible for your writing come to life and positively touch the lives of others.
